Linux Install Fest Aug 18th 2007 @ MIT

From the BLU Discussion List:

Boston Linux Installfest XXVI
When: Saturday, August 18, 2007 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Where: MIT Building E-51, Room 061

Parking: parking is available in front of the building with a ramp.

What you need to bring: Your computer, monitor, power strips and your Linux distributions. We do have copies of some distributions. In general we have expertise with most distros, but if you need special expertise, please email the BLU discussion list in advance.

COST: It's free! However, we DO have expenses, and contributions are welcome. Please consider contributing $25 per machine.

Our volunteers will help you to install Linux on your own system. While Linux runs on most systems, some systems do have configurations and hardware that may not be supported. Please consult the following web pages for hardware compatibility.

Linux.ORG: http://www.linux.org/hardware/index.html
Hardware HOWTO: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html
Linux Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.linuxdoc.org/

Generally our volunteers have sets of the latest Fedora, SuSE and Ubuntu distributions.

Please refer to the BLU website (http://www.blu.org) for further information and directions. Parking is available in front of the building on Amherst St. Enter the building, and take the elevator to your left down 1 floor. Room 061 is opposite the elevator.

I probably won’t be there, but if your interested in Linux or meeting other Linux folk this will be a good event to go to. The BLU folk are a sound bunch.

Old Pics!

I forgot I had these pics up on my old CS address: http://www.cs.umb.edu/~mtimony/Donegal/index.html

The first set has a few pics taken up in Dungloe. Meself, me sister Jeannie, and my friend Sue spent an afternoon driving there via Glenveagh Park to visit Edel.

We stayed overnight at Edel’s parents house and went out on the lash. And the next day went up the old road to Maghery which goes along the coast. Was a fun few days.

The last time I was up in Dungloe was for Edel’s Wedding to Robbie in 2005. The following day we some of went over the Maghery again, was another fun couple of days! 🙂

DMC-TZ3 Zoom

So I got the Panasonic DMC-TZ3 for my birthday, which was July 10th!

It does take decent pictures, but they do seem a little feathery when you zoom in. My old Canon S200 seemed to take sharper pics, but this difference isn’t noticeable unless you zoom in. Here’s two sample pics of a sunrise up at the lake.

The camera does have an incredible zoom, 10x, for its size. The first pic is of the sunrise without zooming, the second is a full zoom:

Sunrise Sunrise @ the lake

I got the camera on NewEgg.com for less than $300, and a 4GB SDHC card for $38, it also came with a free 1GB card, but I felt that it would be too small for extended trips.

One wee coffee plant left?

Neat story about a coffee plant, found on only one island in the Indian Ocean, thought to be extinct:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5307047

In 1877, a European visitor, passing through Rodrigues, made a drawing of it and that is the only image we had of this plant, because after that, goats and pigs began to multiply on Rodrigues, and the plant began to disappear. By mid-century, it was presumed to be extinct. Then in 1979, a biology teacher on Rodrigues handed out copies of that 1877 drawing to a group of 12-year-olds, and one of the boys raised his hand and said, “Please, sir, I’ve got one near my house.”
